Crushing Cars Online
In our first edition of Last Known Issue I introduced Gary Vaynerchuk’s book “Crush It, Cash in on Your Passion” Crush It!: Why Now is the Time to Cash in on Your Passion (if you missed that edition you can see it along with other articles at jamesvickery.com.au). The book outlines some quick, simple strategies for taking your business online through the use of blogs, Facebook, Twitter and other social mediums.
I can’t think of a better example of a company that is “crushing it” online right now than MotorActive, [...]

Are you leveraging technology to run in the right direction?
Yesterday I finally fulfilled my new years resolution and ran in the Blackmores Running Festival (Bridge Run).
About 35,000 people participated in the annual event and if like me, you haven’t been involved in an event of this scale before you’d be forgiven for wondering how on earth you can organise thousands of people to run at the same time in the same place. Leaving aside the operational requirements, volunteers, transportation and safety concerns I used what mental energy I had left to think about ways we can use technology to coordinate and organise our business enquiries. [...]

The end of email? I’ve been following some articles with interest that industry thought leaders believe email is a dying technology and new forms of communication evolving through social media will soon change our lives.
I read this with interest because one of the primary frustrations that we share with our clients day in and out is the management, support, archiving, spam filtering, time wasting, your-mailbox-is-over-its-size-limit, I didn’t get your email, the-attachment-is-too-big-to-send world of email. It’s not that people don’t like email but it certainly can be a pain in the proverbial.
Not all predictions about the Internet have come true so far, just like we’re not all zooming around in flying cars just yet [...]

Is NBN Très Bien? The National Broadband Network is a difficult topic for me to write about because as far as I’m concerned you can’t have a too-fast internet connection, but as someone who loves technology and also runs a business I have to wear two different hats. 1. My Techie Hat: ”This is really cool and exciting and I love new techie toys to play with” and 2. My Commercial (or taxpayers hat) “Does this make any monetary or commercial sense?”
A quick recap [...]

IPV6 – is this the next Y2K bug? So tonight we’re gonna party like it’s 1999..again. If you were using a computer back in the late 90′s there is a very high probability you were asked the question “are your computers Y2K compliant”. There’s an equally high likelihood you upgraded around that time anyway and never had to experience any problems. Well 2000 has been and gone along with planes falling from the sky, global economies being shutdown and problems with your clock radio. We all thought there was stability in the universe.. that was until I started noticing some propaganda blogs and articles about the internet protocol IPV4 and our subsequent doomed existence. [...]
I’m off to Microsoft’s Partner Conference the week after next. It caused me to reflect on last years Partner Conference and I was reminded of the 2 key messages – the launch of Windows 7 (or the sweeping under the rug of Windows Vista) and the shift toward Cloud Computing. It’s amazing that in 12 short months both of those messages have had such an impact on the global IT and business community. Windows 7 has proven to be a good platform and Vista is rarely spoken of – and If we had any doubts about the presence of Cloud Computing and where our data is ultimately headed Microsoft demonstrated by showing us an aerial view of one of their enormous “server farms”or better known as data centres. I can’t find the exact pic they showed us last year but there is an excellent shot here http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/hiner/?p=1834 and a pretty good article too. It’s not just Microsoft in this space either, Google’s entire business model is based on and in the cloud, and Apple aren’t far behind on building these mega complexes.
Apple lovers will be thrilled to know that I’ve finally taken the plunge and bought a new iPad. After I got over the sting of yet another mobile plan and the $4 million in accessories (ok a slight exaggeration) – I was stoked when our resident Solutions Architect created an app so that I can get into my PC, our clients reports and all of my work files with a flick of the finger (not that finger!).. if you haven’t had a play with the iPad its well worth taking a look at an Apple store or checking out their website at http://www.apple.com/au/ipad/ – I’m no richer for the experience but I must admit.. it has changed everything slightly now that you won’t see me lugging around a laptop bag with a pen and a notepad – it’s all in my little iPad for now.
