From Dynasty’s to VDI, The Evolution of the Desktop.

For centuries we’ve had something in common with one another, from the Ming Dynasty to the British Royals, from homemakers to high powered executives on Wall St we’ve organised, created, collaborated and commanded from a desk found in most homes, offices, castles and military bases since we graduated from the stone ages. The desktop, a place where you know you’ll find your pen and paper, your intray, your letters, your life.  It’s a part of our evolution.

Technology of course typically emulates our real life behaviours and for the past 25-30 years we’ve not only maintained our traditional desks but the desktop of the modern computer has played a significant role in how we organise our work and personal lives. Whether you’re a Mac or a PC user you keep the tools you use such as email, documents and applications right there on your desktop where it can be found and used at your leisure and for many years this has been the status quo.

Down To Earth Cloud Event – Sydney Aug 10th 2011

Wow! What a week it has been over at I Know IT. When we decided to launch an event demonstrating the real side of the cloud – the data center – we had no idea the kind of response we would get. To have such an enthusiastic group of CEO’s, MD’s and CIO’s attend this I Know IT event certainly says a lot about cloud and how keen leaders are to learn about this technology and how it impacts their business.

The event, titled Down to Earth Cloud Computing was sponsored by PACNet and attendees enjoyed lunch followed by an exclusive behind the scenes tour of PACNet’s new data center in Liverpool St, Sydney.

I think attendees took away different outcomes from the event, but certainly the common theme was “cloud is here to stay”. With such a massive investment in data center’s like PACNet’s $40m facility, and to see empty floors just ready to be converted into more rack space for servers I think many within the group were blown away by the sheer investment in cloud computing.

Post event it has been really interesting to see and hear the shift from “what is the cloud?” to talking about how their own individual needs can be met by the cloud. This really resonated for me because you often wonder running an IT event if it will be too technical or too dull for attendees. In this case the conversation is now moving toward a constructive discussion about what services may be suitable in the data center versus on premise.

This has certainly been a great “lunch ‘n learn” and I most definitely look forward to hosting many more.

 

 

 

All care, no responsibil-I.T – Last Known Issue 2011.18

The IT media has been going to town with the latest news about Distribute.IT. The web hosting entity, who has now been bailed out by Netregistry was taken out by a malicious hacking attack that destroyed 4800 websites and all of their backups as well.

When businesses look to host or “cloud” their data such as websites, email, documents and accounting data many don’t openly question the backup procedures of the host themselves and in the case of Distribute.IT the end result was grim. Of the 4800 websites, very few organisations had a recent up to date backup of their data and the web host was unable to recover them despite their efforts.  Netregistry were able to recover some older backups of some sites.

Netregistry salvages Distribute.IT customers

Earlier week when I put together an article about choosing the right domain provider (Ticking Timebomb.. Who is hosting your.com.au Domain Name) I could not have imagined that this week would see one of the first and worst cases of cloud disaster when Distribute.IT announced 4800 of its customers websites were destroyed beyond repair by hackers.

Today Netregistry announced the purchase of the troubled cloud host and offered customers free hosting for one month while they sort through the mess which includes billing issues not to mention a total loss of data for most Distribute.IT customers:

Here’s the FAQ from Netregistry’s site (plus view the video from Netregistry CEO, Larry Bloch above):
1. What exactly happened to Distribute.IT in the first instance?
It’s our understanding that there was a targeted hacker attack on the Distribute.IT network – following which the hacker caused permanent damage to backup systems as well as core services, making them impossible to restore.

2. Did we acquire Distribute.IT?
The Netregistry Group acquired Distribute.IT and Click ‘n Go customers and assets on 23th June 2011.
3. Access to registry info (for example delegation, transfer, EPP/domain passwords) –
When will Netregistry get access to assist customers with EPP requirements?
At this time, the current ETA on access to AusRegistry data is 24 hours.
4. How do I view the WHOIS details for Distribute.IT registered domains?
WHOIS for Distribute.IT is currently down, ie. we can not validate ownership. At this time there is no ETA on uptime of WHOIS to allow transfer out. We will update this FAQ as soon as this becomes available.
5. What services are we going to provide to these customers for free in the short term?
Web hosting including SiteBuilder, PHP, .NET and Database access.
6. How long can customers hold free services?
At this stage the minimum will be one month, during which we will review previous Distribute.IT billing data. We expect that within this one month period we should be able to settle everyone in, and make plans for subscriptions further down the track.
7. Is Netregistry Group going to match Distribute.IT prices?
We will be honouring all web hosting payments previously made to Distribute.IT. Where possible, we will maintain the same pricing as previously advertised on Distribute.IT and Click ‘n Go.
8. Are we going to support customers from today? Who’s doing it?
The Netregistry Group call centre will service all customers. ALL customer facing staff at Netregistry are now answering the Distribute.IT priority number for the time being. Shortly after more permanent support processes will be established.
9. Where is Distribute.IT email managed?
At Netregistry, there is a correspondence email queue and we endeavour to get back to all customers within a 24 hr period.
While this ensures Distribute.IT’s customers will have a place for their websites to call home, it’s highly unlikely many customers will ever recover their websites as Distribute.IT admit that not only were the original’s destroyed by the hackers but the backups were compromised and destroyed as well.
With more and more IT assets moving into the cloud this is a harsh and timely reminder that while the location of our IT data has changed, that best practices shouldn’t.  Websites and other data should be backed up either offline or in a secure remote location.  Well done for Netregistry, one of the few providers who clearly state their backup and disaster recovery processes on their website.
This is a good opportunity for all businesses to review their providers backup procedures (and liability insurance) and consider additional locations for their critical data.  Good luck to (former) Distribute.IT customers.  Hope you get up and running again soon after such an unwanted and unnecessary nightmare.

name but other than that it just works – at least it should.

I’ve had this old banker’s motto running through my head this past week (did somebody say it’s the end of the financial year?) – the motto “Topline is vanity, bottom line is sanity, cash is reality” refers to how many company’s and individuals for that matter often focus heavily on revenue, the top line of their financial statement, rather than reality, the bottom line.

Personally, I don’t like financial statements.

It’s a known fact around the office at I Know IT that if you put a page full of P&L or Balance Sheet figures under my nose I go into convulsions, beads of sweat pour down my forehead and I have been known to go cross eyed.   I don’t wear glasses – but for some reason when I’m reading a financial statement, I feel like I need to.  It’s not that I’m innumerate, I can read them and (sadly) I have to.  But if I could trade that moment for say.. sticking my head in a vise .. then I’d do that instead.
